Y6 visit the air-raid shelters at Downs Junior School

Year 6 visited Downs Junior School this week where they found out all about about rationing, gas masks and air-raid shelters from people who actually lived through the war years. They heard some amazing personal stories of courage, disaster, luck and hope.

They went into the school’s air raid shelters (under their playground) to find out what it must have been like to be down there during an air-raid. “Frightening, cramped, dark, scary and boring,” were common responses although for year 6 in 2021, it was also “exciting and fun”!
