St Luke’s U11’s Table Tennis Team

The St Lukes Under 11 Table tennis team have been very successful lately.

With the help of Brighton Table Tennis club and the school tables provided by the PCTA Table tennis has really taken off at St Lukes over the past few years and the Under 11 team have been taking this further in recent competitions.

The 6 person Table tennis team made up of year 6 pupils Ryan Finley Rafa Gwilym Jedd and Ashton took part in the Sussex schools competition in early December. Playing matches of best of 3 sets they raced to victory. Winning all their matches and not dropping a set the entire competition.

By winning the Sussex county tournament they qualified for the South East Zone finals where they would be up against teams from Kent Essex Hertfordshire West Sussex, Surrey and South London.

Due to competition rules St Lukes were only able to enter a team of 4 in the next round. Ryan Finley, Rafa and Gwilym travelled to Morpeth table tennis club in East London on the 15th January.

In the Group stages they faced a difficult start against a very good team from Earls Hall School from Essex (a school which has produced previous national Under 11 Champion teams). They played excellently and came through as 7-1 victors.

The second group match was against Amshurst school from Kent. The boys came through strongly with an 8-0 victory.

The semi final match was played against Greenway school in Hertfordshire. The team had really hit their stride by now winning 8-0 again.

The final was played against Earls Hall from Essex again, as they had spent the rest of the day unbeaten. There were some close and difficult matches, but St Lukes battled through to an unassailable 6-1 lead to be crowned the Winners of the South East regional final.

The Team continue to the Southern Regional Finals in Bristol on Sunday 5th February with a place in the National finals up for grabs.

Well done to the whole Team, and we wish them lots of luck in Bristol!
